Post-Construction Cleaning Checklist_ 5 Steps to Take

Post-Construction Cleaning Checklist: 5 Steps to Take

The best part of a home renovation project is the moment you look around at all that’s been completed. It’s time to sit back and enjoy your newly renovated space, right? Unfortunately, that time hasn’t come quite yet! Before you can kick off your shoes and relax on your sofa, you must first complete the post-construction cleaning of your home. Any dust and debris lying around after construction must be removed to prevent it from getting into the ventilation system and clogging the air vents.

Almost all renovation projects generate dust particles that infiltrate every nook and cranny of the space you’ve painstakingly remodeled. Don’t let layers of dust turn your newly renovated home into something worn and shabby. Put on a dust mask and follow this foolproof 5-step routine to clean up after your property has been restored.

Step #1: Take Good Care of Your Carpets and Soft Furnishings

Despite your best efforts to protect your floors and furnishings, dust and dirt will find their way in. These microscopic particles become trapped in fabric items such as upholstered furniture, carpets, and curtains. Allowing dust to settle after renovation and construction work is not only unsightly, but it can also cause damage. When left between the fabric fibers, dust loosens the weave and causes the material to wear and tear.

To avoid all of this:

  1. Get the vacuum and thoroughly clean all soft furniture and carpet.
  2. Change the attachments to ensure that you don’t miss cleaning even the most difficult-to-reach areas of the fabric, such as folds and crevices. If your sofa has removable cushions, take them outside and beat the dust off of them.
  3. Vacuum the mattresses and the underlying frames of furniture and beds.
  4. Repeat the entire procedure one more time.

Step #2: Remove Any Dust and Dirt Particles From the Walls

Begin by cleaning the dust from the ceilings and walls, as they, too, collect dirt during home improvement. Dry dusting is the best method for removing particles without contaminating the freshly plastered and decorated surface.

Depending on the type of paint used on the walls, you may be able to use a damp microfibre towel. Vacuum all decorative embellishments such as moldings and pediments to ensure no dust particles hide in their crevices.

Step #3: Polish Furniture and Hard Surfaces

The next step is to clean and polish all hard surfaces, beginning at the top and working your way down. Vacuum all the bookshelves and shelves inside the cabinets. Wipe all countertops, bookshelves, door frames, and other flat surfaces and hard furnishings to ensure a dust-free environment. Remember to clean the windowsills, window frames, and all of the handles and doorknobs.

Step #4: Change Air Filters and Clean the Ventilation System

Even if you only renew one area of your home, it is critical to check and maintain your home’s overall ventilation. Changing the filters in the renovated space reduces the dust that flows through the air ducts; otherwise, particles will spread throughout the house.

Remove all grids that cover the vents, clean them with soap and water, and let them dry completely before reinstalling them. The dust particles left by builders are acceptable and do not appear significant; however, they are present. Inhaling these particles is hazardous because it can cause allergies and respiratory problems.

Step #5: Put the Finishing Touches for a Dust-Free Home

After you’ve completed all of the post-construction cleanings, you can determine whether or not your home is ready to use. However, you should always check to see any finishing touches that you should make to ensure that you have a safe and clean place to live.
