When we make a New Year’s resolution to declutter and organize, we usually turn our attention to the areas that get the most traffic – the kitchen and the living room. But spring cleaning goes beyond those core areas.
Everyone knows that cleaning the bathroom, kitchen, and living room once a week is a good idea, but fewer people consider cleaning the other rooms in their homes on a regular basis. This can lead to trouble.
Don’t let the spring cleaning bug slip by the items that get overlooked year after year. Getting some TLC can bring these overlooked items back to life and really freshen up your home. With that in mind, here are some ideas for your neglected, off-the-beaten-path cleaning projects.
Don't Forget to Include the Following in Your Spring Cleaning
1. The Dishwasher
We all know that the dishwasher will clean your dishes, but what you don’t realize is that the dishwasher doesn’t really clean itself. Over time, the grime and buildup inside the dishwasher can become thick and difficult to remove.
To keep your dishwasher running like the day you bought it, open the dishwasher door after each load. Remove the filter and run hot water over it. Sprinkle some baking soda over the bottom of the dishwasher and run your dishwasher on the steam cycle.
2. Drawers and Organizers
Over time, drawers, cabinets, and closets will fill with things that you may no longer use. The piles of stuff can create a mess that makes it difficult to find what you need. Get in the habit of decluttering drawers and closets on a regular basis. You can do this by setting aside 15 or 20 minutes each week to tidy up the areas of the house where you store your stuff.
Unclutter drawers by removing all the items and sorting through them. Throw away the items you don’t need and recycle the items (like aluminum cans) that you can. Finally, you can return the remaining items to the drawer and have more efficient use of the space.
3. Ice Maker
You might not have given much thought to your ice maker until now. But the salt build-up and mineral deposits in your ice maker are something that you need to keep an eye on.
To keep your ice maker running like new, clean it at least once a month. You’ll need to clean the ice maker manually. Turn off your water supply and flush the water lines.
Next, pull the ice tray out and clean it with warm, soapy water. Then, run a few batches of fresh water through the ice maker to flush out any remaining debris. The next time your ice maker makes ice, you will notice a big difference in the taste and quality.
The Bottom Line: Unlikely Things to Remember When Spring Cleaning Your Home
It’s easy to get swept up in the romance of spring and all of the newness that comes with it. When you’re in the midst of spring cleaning, you may forget to include some of the things on our list. If that’s the case, make sure to mark your calendar and give the list above a little extra attention this coming springtime.
