Cleaning Hacks: How To Remove Pet Urine From Your Carpet
Whether you’ve got a cute little kitten, a brand new puppy, or an old furry friend who’s been around for years, pets are part of the family, and when it comes to toilet training they’re like toddlers—bound to have a few mishaps along the way.
As a pet owner, at some point your furry friend is going to have an accident on the carpet. The good news is, pet urine is easier to clean than you might think.
So what should you do if your pet wees on the carpet, and what are the best ways to remove stains and smells from pet urine? In this episode of Cleaning Hacks, Elke Keeley shows us her simple process for removing pet pee from carpet.
When pets urinate on the floor, it’s important to act quickly to avoid the urine soaking in. The easiest way to prevent damage to the carpet is to soak up any excess liquid with paper towel.
Pets are creatures of habit, and if they can smell their urine on the floor they’re likely to wee there again and again and again. Spraying the area with an enzyme-based cleaner which will break down the urine and prevent the smell from sticking around.
Non-toxic enzyme cleaners should be available at all good pet stores, alternatively a homemade remedy with one part vinegar and one part cold water can be used. It’s important not to apply heat to the stain as this can lock in the smell—so no hair dryers or warm water. Once the area is dry, then it’s time to apply bicarb soda across the stain and leave for 24 hours.
Wondering what to do if your pet has urinated on the couch, bed, or other furniture or decor? Elke says “this same cleaning process can be used on furniture such as couches and mattresses”.
